September marked the start of National Organic Month, an annual event dedicated to promoting and celebrating organic living.
It’s also about raising awareness about the benefits of organic products and sustainable alternatives, all while embracing a healthier and more eco-friendly lifestyle.
This month-long celebration is yet another opportunity to reflect on how our everyday choices impact the environment, our health – and the future of the planet.
But it’s not just about reflection, everybody can take an active part.
The Origins of Organic Month
What is organic month? Well, Organic Month was first established by the Soil Association, a UK-based charity that champions organic farming and sustainable living.
It all started in 2013. The idea was simple - it is a whole month of raising awareness and highlight the importance of betting on organic products, sustainable agriculture, and mindful consumption.
Organic farming focuses on avoiding synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), instead relying on natural processes and materials that protect the soil, water, and biodiversity.
The primary goals of Organic Month are to:
-
Educate the public on the environmental and health benefits of organic products.
-
Promote sustainable farming practices that protect natural resources.
-
Encourage people to make small yet impactful changes in their daily lives that reduce their ecological footprint.
-
Support local organic farmers and businesses.
As consumers grow more conscious of the impact their choices have on the environment and their own well-being, Organic Month serves as a reminder that shifting towards organic products and practices is so much more than just a personal choice.
It has the power to help our planet, if not save it.
Why Organic?
The main message of Organic Month is to choose organic products. Whether it’s the food we eat, the skincare and beauty products we use, or the clothes we wear.
And why is that? Is it only about the planet.
1. Better for the Environment
Organic farming avoids the use of harmful chemicals and synthetic fertilisers, reducing pollution and preserving natural ecosystems.
With natural methods such as crop rotation, composting, and biological pest control, organic farmers promote biodiversity and help maintain soil and water health.
This, in turn, protects wildlife and reduces the environmental impact of agriculture. And healthy soil means healthy produce.
2. Healthier for You
Yes, it is. Since organic farmers steer clear of all synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, and GMOs, the produce is free from them all. And that means you won’t consume the residue, which, in turn, means fewer harmful chemicals in your body.
Organic food, for instance, often contains higher levels of essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
And organic skincare and beauty products are typically made with natural ingredients, which are much better for the skin and reduce the risk of irritation.
3. Supports Ethical Practices
Choosing organic means supporting farming methods that respect animal welfare, fair labour practices, and sustainable livelihoods for small farmers.
Organic farming is often more labour-intensive, focusing on traditional methods that are kinder to the land and animals.
If you buy organic, you’re helping their mission and contributing to a more equitable and ethical supply chain.
Taking the high road is always more challenging but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take it – even if it’s indeed a road less travelled.
How to Celebrate Organic Month
Celebrating Organic Month is about more than just buying organic products for a few weeks. We should look at it as an opportunity to adopt sustainable practices and incorporate organic living into our daily lives.
There’s a lesson in there that can help us make a lasting change – and what comes with it. But how can a regular person join? What are we supposed to do?
1. Shop Locally and Organically
One of the easiest ways to join the celebration is by supporting local organic farmers.
Visit farmers' markets, or take it a step further and join a community-supported agriculture (CSA) programme, or shop for organic produce at your local grocery store.
Look for certifications such as the Soil Association logo, which indicates that the products meet organic standards.
2. Switch to Organic Skincare and Beauty Products
Your skin absorbs much of what you put on it, so organic skincare and beauty products can make a difference for both your health and the environment.
Organic beauty products are made with natural ingredients and avoid harmful synthetic chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances.
3. Grow Your Own Organic Garden
If you have enough space, why not start your own organic garden? You can grow your own vegetables, fruits, and herbs.
It may sound like a lot but it’s really not that complicated. And there’s something so rewarding about seeing that truly fresh, organic produce.
Use natural compost, avoid chemical pesticides, and focus on companion planting to maintain a healthy garden ecosystem.
Your own garden is also going to give you an extra push to eat clean. And that’s always better.
4. Reduce Waste and Recycle
In addition to choosing organic, reducing overall waste is a key part of sustainable living.
Reuse, recycle, and reduce your plastic consumption. And there are plenty of ways to do that: switch to reusable bags, bottles, and containers.
5. Join Organic Workshops and Events
Throughout Organic Month, there are numerous events, webinars, and workshops dedicated to teaching about organic farming, sustainable living, and eco-friendly practices.
Many of these are held by local communities, organic brands, and environmental organisations.
Participating in these events can help you learn more about organic living and connect with others who share your values. A great opportunity!
Impact Across Industries
Food is definitely at the very centre of these efforts since that’s where organic practices can make the biggest difference.
But it’s not limited to it. This movement is actually making waves across other sectors, too – from fashion and beauty to home décor and cleaning products.
More and more brands choose to prioritise transparency, ethical sourcing, and eco-friendly production methods – all of which contribute to a healthier planet.
1. Organic Fashion
Sustainable fashion is gaining traction, with many brands opting for organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, and other eco-friendly materials.
Organic fabrics, much like other organic produce, are free from harmful pesticides and chemicals, making them better for the environment and for the workers who work hard to make them.
Look for relevant certifications – let’s take our range of eco towels as an example. They meet OEKO-TEX 100 Standard and are GOTS-certified – and that goes for our organic bath mat range as well as the collection of bamboo towels.
2. Organic Skincare and Beauty
The beauty industry has seen a growing demand for organic products that avoid synthetic chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances.
Organic skincare is made with ingredients that are safer for your skin and the environment, often packaged in recyclable or biodegradable containers to reduce the ecological footprint even further.
3. Organic Cleaning Products
Cleaning products are another area where organic options are making a big splash. Organic cleaning products avoid harsh chemicals that can be harmful to both human health and the environment.
Instead, they use natural ingredients like essential oils, vinegar, and plant-based surfactants that are biodegradable and non-toxic.
Misona and Our Commitment to Sustainability
At Misona, sustainability and organic living are at the heart of everything we do. We believe in creating products that are not only beautiful and functional but also environmentally responsible.
Our mission is to offer high-quality products that reflect our commitment to the planet.
We use organic fabrics and sustainable materials, like bamboo, organic cotton, and diatomite to make all our textiles. All certified, and wrapped in plastic-free packaging. But our commitment goes beyond our products and business aspects.
We’re involved in various environmental initiatives, including our partnership with CleanHub, which we are particularly proud of this, as we get to work together to reduce ocean-bound plastic pollution.
