Post-Summer Towel Care Guide - What to Do with Your Beach Towel

Summertime is nearly sadly over – and so are the beach days.  

That means it’s time to stash away our beach towels until they can finally come out next summer. 

But if you want them to be beach-ready next summer, you should send them off to their well-deserved rest the right way.  

And a proper post-summer beach towel is a bit more than just washing, drying and folding them away to sit in a cupboard for the next 10 months or so. Especially after a proper summer. 

All that fun and joy, we don’t even think about what they go through. Sun, salt water, damp, sun cream, sand. That’s enough to rough up any fabric. To undo all that, you can’t rely on your regular washing routine. 

How to Make Sure Your Beach Towels Are Safe 

All it takes is some extra effort and specific steps to make sure you can enjoy them next year. 

  1. Shake it out before it goes anywhere near water. Dry sand comes away far more easily than sand that's already been wet and dried in. 

  1. Rinse in cold water before it goes in the machine. A few minutes under a cold tap moves most of the dissolved salt out before it gets the chance to crystallise. 

  1. Treat any sun cream marks before they're fully dry. Cold water first, a little washing-up liquid worked gently into the mark. 

  1. Wash on a normal cycle, around 30–40°C. No special settings needed — never bleach, which reacts with avobenzone in chemical sunscreens and deepens the mark instead of lifting it. 

  1. Dry it fully and flat, out of direct light. Outdoors or somewhere with real airflow — not draped over a radiator for twenty minutes and called done. 

  1. Store it loose, not packed tight. A crammed cupboard blocks airflow between towels just as effectively as sealing it in a bag would.

Why Beach Towel Care Is Different at the End of Summer 

Why indeed. Well, think of it like you would about your winter shoes once spring comes. They’ve been through a lot, and they're about to spend (hopefully) the next 10 months locked away in the closet. Essentially, it’s about damage control. 

Beach towels are no different. They won’t get much use outside of summertime, so if you want your striped beach towel to look just as chic and work just as well the same time next year, you need a bit more effort. 

We did say they go through a lot – but what exactly? What makes salt or sand, for instance, so difficult to handle? 

Salt in the Fibres 

Well, salt doesn't just rinse away. 

Once seawater dries inside the weave, it leaves actual crystals sitting between the fibres – not residue, crystals, with edges sharp enough to cut.  

Conservators studying prehistoric wool pulled from the ancient salt mines at Hallstatt, in Austria, have documented exactly this process: as a salted textile dries, the salt inside it forms hard crystals that stiffen the material, and every fold or flex after that abrades the weakened fibres a little further.  

Of course, a beach towel isn't sitting in a mine for three thousand years (we can all agree on that). But the same mechanism plays out at a much smaller scale every single time a towel dries with seawater still inside it – the fibres come back that bit rougher, that bit weaker, one dry-out at a time. 

And this is exactly why a normal wash doesn't solve it on its own. A 30–40°C cycle cleans the towel – but it doesn't necessarily guarantee all salt's been moved out of the fibres. 

If salt isn't thoroughly rinsed away before the towel dries, repeated cycles of drying and flexing could contribute to mechanical wear. Not ideal. 

Why Sand Does More Damage Than It Looks Like 

Sand feels like the least of it. Brush it off, shake the towel out, move on. 

But sand doesn’t just sit there politely once it's inside the weave. A 2010 study in the Textile Research Journal looked specifically at what solid particle impact does to fibre surfaces under repeated contact - the same physics as sandblasting, just at a much smaller scale and a much slower pace, of course 

Every grain trapped between the fibres, dragged and pressed with each fold, each sit, each trip through the wash, is doing a small amount of that same merciless erosive work.

Not all at once. It’s more of an accumulative effect kind of thing. Piling up, if you will. Similar pattern to the salt, just mechanical instead of chemical. 

More to Sun Cream Than Meets the Eye 

This one isn't really about grease. Or not only about grease. 

Most sun cream stains that survive a wash are a chemical reaction, not just oil on the surface. Chemical sunscreens built around avobenzone react with the minerals in hard water – iron, mainly – and what's left behind looks exactly like a rust stain, yellow-orange and stubborn. 

It's the same mechanism dermatologists and fabric-care specialists point to when people ask why sunscreen marks refuse to lift: avobenzone absorbs UV light and reacts with those minerals, and heat only locks the reaction in further.  

That's what makes this one different from an ordinary stain – tumble-dry it once with the mark still in, and it's not coming back out. No amount of re-washing undoes what the heat's already set. 

Mineral sunscreens – zinc oxide, titanium dioxide – don't cause this particular reaction. They can leave a chalky white residue instead, which is a considerably easier problem to solve than rust, and no permanent risk if it goes through the dryer. 

Or the other side of this equation – the fabric matters just as much as the sunscreen type. Synthetic microfibre towels hold onto these oils more stubbornly than natural fibres do; an organic cotton beach towel lets go of them more easily in an ordinary wash, which is one of the advantages of most eco towels that we often tend to overlook. But we shouldn’t. 

Why Does a Clean Towel Come Back Out Musty? 

That’s a tricky one. Because damp doesn’t mean wet. It doesn’t even have to feel wet to be damp. 

Museum conservators have an actual figure for this. The Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute notes that stagnant air above 80% relative humidity is enough to support mould growth on cotton and other plant fibres.  

A folded stack of towels at the back of a cupboard, with no airflow and every fold trapping a little bit of moisture, can reach that threshold far more easily than we’d think  especially straight after the daily use-and-dry-quickly routine for the whole summer. 

And once that starts, it isn't something a wash fixes after the fact. Mould growing inside the fibres is a different problem to a smell sitting on the surface; by the time the musty smell is obvious enough to notice, it's already set up camp deep within the weave. The same ten months that make a towel safe to put away also make a slightly-too-damp one exactly the environment that figure describes.

Light does its own version of this over the same stretch of time, at a slower pace - a shelf that gets any direct sun fades colour just as steadily over ten months as a fortnight on the beach does, just without anyone noticing until the towel's back out next June. By then, the damage’s already done. 

Little Care Goes a Long Way 

It’s clear why beach towels need a bit more before they can retire for the rest of the year. Hopefully, it's also clear why it makes sense to go that extra mile. Do this now, and you can rest assured that next June, your towel comes out of the cupboard beach-ready. 

That's really the whole difference. Not that a good towel never sees salt, sand, or an afternoon of sun cream, because every towel does. It's whether ten minutes gets spent now, or skipped. Same as the shoes. Damage control now, or damage found later, when there's nothing left to do about it. 

It's why eco towels are worth the fuss in the first place, not because they're precious, but because the fuss is small and the alternative isn't.
