Diatomite Bath Mat FAQ's
How long can a diatomite bath mat last?

Our bath mats are made from 100% high-quality diatomite, designed to take wear and tear really well. With proper care, you can expect your stone bath mat to last 3-5 years, far outlasting most traditional fabric mats or other more eco-friendly options, such as a cork bath mat or a jute bath mat.

Are stone bath mats better than fabric?

Yes, stone bathroom mats offer better absorbency and hygiene, with a higher practical value compared to fabric mats, especially synthetic mats. They dry quickly, resist mould and bacteria, and don’t require frequent washing or replacing, unlike most mats.

Do stone bath mats get mouldy?

A diatomite stone is what essentially makes it an anti-mould bath mat. It dries quickly, keeping moisture and dampness to a minimum, and thanks to anti-mould properties of diatomite, this is the best bath mat in terms of hygienic properties you can get.

Is this bath mat non-slip?

The bath mat itself is not slip-resistant. However, to keep your mat firmly in place, you’ll find a free non-slip backing sheet included in your box.

Do stone bath mats hold bacteria?

They are very hygienic. Diatomite’s natural anti-bacterial properties inhibit bacterial growth, making these mats far less prone to harbouring harmful germs compared to fabric alternatives.

How do I clean a diatomite mat?

The most effective way is to use sandpaper. We supply every piece with a small sheet of delicate P320 sandpaper. Regularly gently scrub the surface to remove stains and restore absorbency. For detailed care tips, check out our dedicated guide on how to clean bath mats.

Can I use the mat with underfloor heating?

Yes, underfloor heating won’t affect the quality or performance of our diatomite bath mat.

Are stone drying mats healthy and safe for use?

Absolutely! Here at Misona, we want to provide you with peace of mind that our diatomite mat is perfectly fit for purpose. They’re safe for us – as well as our pets. You might’ve heard the news about the diatomaceous earth bath mat recall in 2020, but our bath mat has been tested (with an independent testing body) and is asbestos-free! You can check our lab results yourself!

Are stone drying mats worth it?

Absolutely. While most fabric mats typically need replacing every 6–12 months (that’s around £15–25 each time), a stone mat lasts for much longer with minimal maintenance. Only memory foam bath mats come close, but with more upkeep. Plus, with diatomite stone, you save time and money on washing, drying, and replacing soggy mats. You’ll only regret not switching sooner.

Is this kind of stone bathroom mat heavy?

Surprisingly, no! The mat weighs around 2kg, thanks to diatomite’s unique composition of fossilised algae remains. You can rest assured it’s light and easy to move.

What about storage? Where to put a bath mat when not in use?

Our quick dry bath mat is designed to stay out, as it dries quickly and adds a touch of sleek and modern design in your bathroom. However, if you'd prefer to store it away, its slim profile (just 1 cm high) means it can often slide under bathroom cabinets, shelving units, or beside the bath. Just make sure it's placed flat to avoid accidental chipping or tipping.

Does it feel cold underfoot?

Not at all — it feels more like a wooden bath mat than a cold stone.

How absorbent is this quick-dry bath mat?

Thanks to diatomite’s high porosity, our mats absorb water within about a minute, earning the quick-dry reputation. It’s the perfect natural bath mat.

How do stone bath mats dry so fast?

This bath mat dries quickly thanks to diatomite – a soft rock with a high silica content, giving it exceptional porosity and absorbency. It’s not your typical stone but a highly specialised material.

What can I do if the colour I like is out of stock?

We do our best to keep our stock and supply chains working as smoothly as possible so that you can enjoy all of your favourite products. Unfortunately, occasionally we run out, and some colour options in our natural stone mat range may not be available at a given point in time. In that case, please contact us at store@misona.co.uk to find out when it becomes available again.

Is this stone bath mat suitable for allergy sufferers?

Yes, its anti-bacterial and odour-free qualities make it perfect for allergy sufferers, minimising the risk of any unpleasant reactions.

Why might a stone bath mat stop absorbing water?

The porous structure is what makes a stone bathroom mat absorbent, but those pores can get clogged over time – especially if the mat is only partially made with diatomite. Damage, improper care and poor quality are the main reasons for the stone mat not absorbing water anymore. Our product is 100% high-quality diatomite, which makes it more durable and resistant to wear and tear so that you can enjoy it – and the convenience it brings into your life – for a long time.

Should my bath mat match my towels?

Not necessarily. Neutral bath mats pair well with various products available in our range of eco towels, like white, sage green, blush pink, or royal blue, so you can turn your bathroom into the relaxing space it’s always meant to be.

Do stone bath mats scratch tile?

No — our diatomite mats are designed with smooth, polished undersides and come with a non-slip backing to protect your floor. You can safely use them on tile, wood, or vinyl without ever having to worry about scratches.

The big question

What is Diatomite?

Originating from the Cretaceous Period, Diatomaceous Earth inhabits oceans and lakes. Found in these waters are fossilised remains of tiny, aquatic organisms, called diatoms.

Our diatomaceous earth mat is constructed through the process of diatom formation, preservation,
and sedimentation, transforming a powdery substance into a solid, durable bath mat.

One characteristic of Diatomite is it's high porosity, making it the perfect addition to soak up moisture from a bathroom, as its highly absorbent composition will leave your feet dry in seconds.

Step off from the magic mat and watch your footprints disappear in front of your eyes - this instant dry bath mat is a must have in any home.

How to clean diatomite?

Easy to care for

Saving you money year after year, this quick dry bath mat doesn't require to be washed in the washing machine like 'traditional' bathmats.

Should you have any stains after use, simply sand paper the mat to remove any stains. We provide a small sheet of sand paper in every box. Sanding off the top layer every so often can also ensure the Diatomite continues to perform to the best of it's absorbent ability.

This method of cleaning, saves you money, water and electricity, whilst also eliminating the effects of leaving a carbon footprint.

Traditional plush mats, often carry microfibres (which are tiny micro-plastics) which cause drastic effects to our oceans. Switching to a sustainable homeware like a Diatomite Bath Mat will prevent any destruction to our already suffering waterways.

BENEFITTING YOU & THE PLANET

The eco-friendly stone bath mat

It may be time to wave goodbye to your plush bathmat and welcome our ground-breaking and innovative diatomaceous earth stone bathroom mat, as it is a great sustainable switch for you and the environment.

Made from the naturally sourced, soft, sedimentary rock, this mat doesn't require the use of any harmful chemicals or pesticides, unlike the conventional material bathmat.

Chemicals used when growing materials such as cotton, causes irreversible effects to the soils, wildlife and waters. The production of Earthstone doesn't leave any sign of negative impact on the Planet.

Even though our incredibly absorbent bath mat is technically made of stone, it doesn't feel like it at all. Thanks to the unique properties of diatomite, we've managed to create a product that's deceivingly light and yet, extremely durable - a truly sustainable bath mat that is built to last.

GREEN & CLEAN

Key to Hygienic and Germ-Free Bathroom

The Misona instant dry bath mat doesn't just dry your feet and keep your bathroom floors safe and dry - it actually actively helps you clean. How is that possible?

Traditional mats are essentially nothing more than rugs, and with the amount of water bathroom spaces have to deal with on a daily basis, keeping up is quite a challenge - it doesn't really matter how absorbent a material is. They all get soggy and soaking wet, often even before your own feet are dry, creating perfect conditions for various types of germs, fungi and bacteria to grow.

The fact that this bath mat dries quickly doesn't tell the whole story either. With all the slippery surfaces and water, all mats were designed for a simple reason - it's safety.

This is precisely the reason why every box of our eco-friendly goodness comes with a solid non-slip backing to keep your feet - and the rest of your body - planted firmly and safely in place.

No more worrying about fading or going off-colour when treated with a wrong detergent. Our quickest-drying bath mat will stand the test of time - both in looks and performance.

This is not a bath mat reimagined - it's a bath mat reinvented.

FULL-CIRCLE SUSTAINABILITY

Green Circularity with Diatomite Bath Mat

Everything has to come full circle - it rings true in life and sustainability. Despite many efforts, it's hard to find truly sustainable and circular material. There are many variables and seemingly insignificant factors that can make any green resource go totally against the idea of sustainability.

But not diatomaceous earth. As long as you'll definitely get to enjoy all the wonderful qualities and properties of our absorbent bath mat range, there's no escaping the passing of time and its trusty companion - the wear and tear. It doesn't mean this sometimes million-year-long journey of diatomite has to end there.

Its incredible voyage began long before we knew it even existed. In the end, good things take time.

Formed from single-cell algae known as diatoms, it's been accumulated in aquatic environments for ages to finally get sourced using responsible practices to end up in your bathroom as the new standard in the world of bath mats. A better, fully eco-friendly one.

When its time comes, it can still work its wonders - but, like a truly sustainable and circular material it is, in a different form. It can be ground back into powder and used in plants to improve water retention, serving yet another purpose and helping create and sustain more life.
